Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about SAT and ACT test dates, registration, score reporting, and college admissions testing.

When should I take the SAT?

Most students take the SAT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and again in the summer or fall of their senior year if they would like to improve their score. Taking the SAT earlier allows students to identify strengths and weaknesses, build confidence, and leave time for additional testing if needed before college application deadlines.

When should I take the ACT?

Many students take the ACT during the spring of their junior year and retake it in the summer or fall of their senior year if they wish to improve their score. The ideal testing timeline depends on a student’s academic schedule, extracurricular commitments, and college application goals. Taking the ACT early provides flexibility and additional opportunities for score improvement.

How far in advance should I register for the SAT or ACT?

Students should register as early as possible, ideally several weeks before the registration deadline. Early registration provides the best chance of securing a preferred test date and testing location. Popular testing centers may fill quickly, particularly during peak testing periods in the spring and fall.

How many times can I take the SAT or ACT?

Students may take the SAT or ACT as many times as they wish. Most students take the SAT or ACT two to three times to maximize their score and become more familiar with the test format. Additional attempts may be beneficial for students pursuing highly selective colleges, competitive scholarships, or specific score goals. Students should balance testing opportunities with their academic workload, extracurricular activities, and college application deadlines.

How many times should I take the SAT or ACT?

Most students take the SAT or ACT two to three times. A second test often leads to score improvements as students become more familiar with the exam format and can focus their preparation on specific areas for improvement. Additional testing may be beneficial if a student is targeting highly selective colleges, competitive scholarships, or specific score goals. Students should balance testing opportunities with their academic, extracurricular, and college application responsibilities.

What is a superscore?

A superscore is a college admissions policy that combines a student’s highest section scores from multiple test dates to create the strongest possible composite score. For example, if a student earns their highest Math score on one SAT administration and their highest Reading and Writing score on another, colleges that superscore may combine those section scores into a new, higher SAT score. Many colleges and universities superscore the SAT, ACT, or both. Students should review each institution’s admissions policies to confirm how scores are evaluated.

Do colleges prefer the SAT or ACT?

Virtually all colleges and universities that require standardized testing accept both the SAT and ACT equally. Neither test is preferred by most institutions. Students should choose the exam that best matches their strengths and testing style. Some students perform better on the SAT, while others achieve stronger results on the ACT. Pittsburgh Prep recommends taking a diagnostic test to determine which exam may be the better fit.

Do test-optional colleges still consider SAT and ACT scores?

Yes. At most test-optional colleges, submitting strong SAT or ACT scores can still strengthen an application. Students should review each college’s admissions policies and determine whether submitting scores supports their overall application strategy.
